FIDE Announces Major Changes in Rating System

FIDE has announced a comprehensive package of changes to the official chess rating system, designed to address rating deflation and streamline player classifications.
The changes, which will take effect on January 1, 2027, include a one-time upward adjustment for players rated below 2000 Elo and a compression of the rating floor. This measure aims to correct deflationary trends caused by the long-term inactivity of recreational players.
Additionally, FIDE will modify the calculation of K-factors for junior players, allowing rapid improvements to be reflected in ratings more quickly. This is expected to help young prodigies achieve master titles faster.
The amendments have been developed by a dedicated panel of mathematicians and chess statistical experts, who analyzed over ten million tournament games played over the last decade.
